A few weeks ago I bought a water table for my kids, because I am a mom who loves science experiments, sensory play, and making messes. I am the mother whose children run off with homemade purple playdoh smashing it into their bedroom carpet and take their washable markers and crayons to create masterpieces on their mommy’s walls and furniture. Yes my house is lived in and my children seem to rule the roost. Well maybe only rule it sometimes, but I love to let my children explore and create even if it means something is stained or ruined.
One of the reasons I bought the water table is my son Tristan loves to play in the water. We are always telling him not to play in the bathroom sink or mess with the refrigerator water spout filling up various cups, bowls, and jars. Tristan loves to play in the water so much he even begs to help me scrub the dishes and as a good mother I let him. I sometimes even call him and ask him if he wants to play with mommy at the sink and usually he comes running. Teaching a boy that scrubbing dishes is playing is an added bonus.
I finally unpacked the water table and set it up. I looked at Pinterest to get ideas for experiments, should I make flubber, explosions, or goop it was limitless, but in the end I decided to go simple. I poured in several pitchers of cold water, gave them the toys included with the table, some blue cups, a couple bowls, a whisk, a ladle, and two straws. I added in about three tablespoons of dish soap and told them to have fun. I had to show them at first how to use their straw to make the bubbles, but it did not take them long to catch on and create lots of bubbles. Simple toys, water, and dish soap kept my son and daughter busy off and on for over four hours that day. They both had so much fun and at one point I heard my daughter Keira pretend she was a pirate saying “Argh Tristan hand over me spoon.” She watches too much NickJr, but it is a joy to watch my children enjoy simple water table fun with bubbles and toys.
